Isotonic is the first category of weight lifting exercise and it means that the strain and force applied to the muscles is uniform. If the basic weight lifting exercise is said to be isometric, it involves exercises that does not affect the muscle length. Most of simple weight training exercises fall under the isometric category.

Plyometric weight lifting exercise on the other hand means weight training exercises that progressively develop the muscle fiber length. This basic weightlifting exercise is usually done with the aid of jumping or the use medicine ball. This form of basic weight lifting exercise is frequently used to develop speed and power rather than strength.
